Does getting older mean we are becoming wiser in the process of aging? I know you probably have heard enough about the aging and getting older process, but there is more to it than making it through one day at a time. We, as a nation are at the beginning of an aging revolution which will bring about changes in how and where we live, will we be able to retire in comfort, having enough income to get us through the next 20 to 30 years we have left on this planet. So do we have the wisdom to make the right decisions to stay in the best health for our age?
I would like to talk about something you can have some degree of control over, that being your overall health. Of course, there are situations that arise where you have no control, such as being diagnosed with a serious illness but even this can be sometimes traced back to to lifestyle choices we made on the way to where we are. If you made it to 65 with no major illness your chances of living a healthy life another 20+ years are pretty good.
Of course, just surviving doesn't cut it. You want those remaining years to be years of optimal health, both physical and mental. How do I do that, you ask? Preparing for retirement is more than accumulating the finances, it also involves making a commitment to yourself to improve your physical and mental health each day. There are many ways to begin on that path and as you can tell from the title of my blog, I think one of the most important things you can do for your body, as you age, is stretching.
As you age, you've probably noticed, you get a little tighter, in the back, hips, shoulders, well what the heck pretty much all over. You feel that tightness as decreased range of motion and pain. Stretching on a regular basis, at least 3 times a week, can loosen up those tight muscles, free up those joints and reduce the pain level. Stretching, can also combined with weight lifting exercises improves balance. Throw in some aerobics for the heart and you are good to go.
One of the best stretch routines is my own called Easy Stretch - Body/Mind Relaxation available on DVD and VHS through this blog.

Stretching is definitely important after a workout or on rest days. But before exercising you should do dynamic stretching, a series of active stretches that simultaneously warm up the muscles and activate them as they stretch them. Sitting down and stretching before a workout is now widely recognized as ineffective.
Stretching BEFORE exercise is so important and unfortunately a lot of the times totally ignored by visitors to the gym.
So, yes, I agree with the active 'warm-up' stretching to get the muscles ready for the workout. Thanks for your important comment.

I'm used to perform stretching exercises before, during and after the end of a workout bodybuilding, which is the sport that I practice with passion!
Unable to obtain sufficient results even with only the use of weights and barbells, and the experience is giving me right!
Would you like to know what exercises I do depending on the daily workout? so you'd get an opinion on it ... thanks! Alberto
